PROGRAMME

On 4 February 2025, Dominique Rabaté – one of the foremost scholars today of contemporary French literature – will visit the Käte Hamburger Centre CURE for a workshop. The discussion with the centre’s fellows and team will be based on Rabaté’s most recent book, Limites de l’empathie (2025), which explores the possibilities and limits of identifying with the Other through literary reading: Can reading allow us to step outside ourselves? And what happens to identification when a story is told, for instance, from the point of view of a war criminal? Drawing on excerpts from Rabaté’s book as well as literary texts, the conversation will also address the complexity and challenges of the paradigm of “healing” through literature.

Born in 1960 in Paris, Dominique Rabaté is professor of contemporary French literature at Université Paris Cité. He has published extensively on twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature, with a sustained focus on the literary voice and the modern subject.

Moderated by Julien Jeusette and Hannah Steurer

External guests are warmly invited to contact us by email at kontakt@khk.uni-saarland.de. Participation is possible upon prior registration and subject to availability.

Dominique Rabaté’s visit to Saarbrücken is a cooperation between CURE and the Institut d’Études Françaises (IEF). On the evening of 4 February, he will be a guest at the IEF. More information is available here.
