CURE is a transdisciplinary institute for advanced study located at Saarland University and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the Käte Hamburg Excellence Initiative. Each year, it hosts up to twelve prominent international fellows from academia and culture.
APPROACH
Each scholar advances an individual scholarly or artistic project related to cultural practices of reparation. The fellows and the institute’s team also collaborate in developing a transnational and transmedial theory of processes of cultural reparation. With this research, we seek to contribute to a broader redefinition of cultural studies.
FOCUS
The centre’s research is devoted to memory cultures, politically significant historical discourses, personal experiences of loss and damage, and questions bridging the gap between nature and culture. It structures its consideration of cultural practices of reparation into three focus areas: history, experience, and nature.
AIMS
The long-term goal of this joint research is to build a comprehensive sociopolitical understanding of individual and collective issues of reparation in an increasingly globalised world. We believe that in the face of existential crises and irreparable damages, such knowledge is crucial for shaping a future in which we and others can live together.
