The Yearbook of the
Käte Hamburger Centre

The rhinoceros stands as a symbol of Europe. Since ancient times, it has been linked to imperial power – appearing as a coat of arms, an extravagant gift among rulers, and a spectacle for the curious. Its horn and armoured body – vestiges of a prehistoric beast – carry a heavy legacy. Thick-skinned, well-fed, and standing firm, it should be able to face the future with confidence, but its poor eyesight makes it prone to agitation. How can a half-blind creature weighing several tonnes dare to step into transition?

Rhinozeros: Europa im Übergang – Europe in transition – is the yearbook of the Käte Hamburger Centre for Cultural Practices of Reparation. It offers a collection of texts and images that explore the present with historical insight. The aim is to engage German society in worldwide, multifaceted conversations about reparations and to confront the challenge of reimagining Europe’s place in the world. Like the centre itself, Rhinozeros is dedicated to fostering international exchange, translation, and openness to the wider world. Thematically organised around a verb – an action – each issue brings together scholarly and artistic voices from within the centre and beyond.

Founded in 2020, Rhinozeros: Europa im Übergang is published by Matthes & Seitz Berlin. Since 2023, has been edited by Franck Hofmann, Markus Messling, and Christiane Solte-Gresser.
