Ukranian Cultural Heritage and Russian Information Operations
Fiona Greenland
Cultural Heritage scholars have generally overlooked the influence of information operations (IO) on narratives and “knowledge” about cultural practices. This is a mistake. Russian intelligence is a sophisticated and multi-faceted industry with significant monetary investments in a range of projects. Its impacts include distorted perceptions of past and present cultural practices and objects. With respect to Ukraine, we can add to this list false claims about the legacy, content, and meaningfulness of Ukrainian-language literature. To be clear, information operations are not knowledge, and they should not be confused with an alternative framework of interpretation. Rather, information operations exploit the suppleness of humanistic interpretation by asserting unfounded claims that are characterized by grievances and emotional manipulation. This talk examines Russian IO targeting Ukrainian literary culture and sets forth a new agenda for bringing cultural heritage studies in line with 21st century political and cultural threats and opportunities.
