PROGRAM
William Klein’s Festival panafricain d’Alger 1969 is an experimental documentary capturing the vibrant spirit and political fervor of the PANAF, that is, the 1969 Pan-African Festival in Algiers. Commissioned by the Algerian government, Klein’s film blends a rich array of visual materials, from archival footage, photographs, and posters to drawings, creating a multifaceted portrait of the festival. The documentary adopts the style of “direct cinema,” presenting raw, unscripted moments from the event, including political speeches and interviews with prominent liberation figures. Musical performances by Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba are interspersed with discussions on postcolonial identity and Pan-African solidarity. Klein’s innovative approach offers a unique historical and artistic reflection on the cultural and political climate of postcolonial Africa.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Franco-Algerian artist Zineb Sedira, who contributed to the rediscovery of this long-forgotten movie.
This event is part of the supporting program for the exhibition THE TRUE SIZE OF AFRICA and is organized in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte and Kino achteinhalb. The event is free of charge, and no registration is required.
