In 2026, the Les Passerelles literature festival once again embarks on a literary and cultural journey along the Moselle and Saar. For six weeks, the cultural barge Baraka will become a floating site for encounters: at its various stops, European authors and artists will come together with local audiences for residencies, conversations, readings, workshops, and other events. This year’s festival focuses on aquatic worlds and contemplation. It approaches rivers and bodies of water as habitats and landscapes, and as places of refuge, borders, and sites of transition – opening up new perspectives on our relationships with water and nature.
On 25 September, the festival and the Péniche Baraka will make a stop in Saarbrücken, where the guest will be Camille de Toledo, a writer and former artist in residence at the Käte Hamburger Centre CURE. Under the title L’Internationale des rivières, he will lead a conversation on the rights of rivers, based on his book, a “narrative of the future” published by Éditions Verdier, in which he imagines a river going to court with a team of lawyers to demand recognition of its “working body” (corps travailleur). This demand challenges existing social and legal orders and explores the possibility of a new form of law – and justice – for exploited natural entities. What changes when rivers are given a voice of their own? Audience members are invited to contribute their own memories, experiences, and reflections on rivers, fresh water, and our relationship with the living world.
