On 30 June, CURE director Markus Messling will deliver a plenary lecture at the summer school organised by the Lisbon Consortium, a network that includes the Catholic University of Portugal, the University of Porto, and the Gulbenkian Foundation, among others. Dedicated to the theme of “disobedience”, this year’s event from 29 June to 3 July 2026 will bring dozens of international PhD candidates to Lisbon. Working together in interdisciplinary workshops, they will tackle questions from scholarly and artistic perspectives. Markus Messling’s lecture, entitled “How to Be Critically Affirmative? On Disobedience in Times of Far-Right Cultural Propaganda”, will explore what it means when concepts such as critique, disobedience, and resistance lose their emancipatory promise and democratising force when appropriated by the far right.
