CURE Director Markus Messling will deliver an invited talk at the Volkswagen Foundation symposium “Humanities and Cultural Studies 2040: New Horizons and Developments”, exploring the kinds of infrastructure the humanities will need in the coming years. The workshop conference, taking place on 21 and 22 September 2026 at Herrenhausen Palace in Hanover, will focus on the future roles and needs of the humanities in Germany. The event will bring together around 120 representatives from a range of disciplines in the humanities, university leadership, research policy, research communication, and journalism to discuss questions including: Are the current organisational structures of the humanities still fit for their purpose? Are new and potentially more integrative organisational forms needed, such as departmental structures of the kind recommended by the German Science and Humanities Council? What forms of interdisciplinary collaboration have proved successful in larger research initiatives? Are new organisational and funding models needed to foster interdisciplinary, team-based cooperation? In his lecture, “It’s Society, Stupid! Grounds – and Pitfalls – of Infrastructure” (It’s Society, Stupid! (Ab)Gründe für Infrastruktur), Messling will examine the relationship between the organisation of scholarship and the positioning of the humanities in society.
