As part of his project “Rivers Beyond Borders”, which builds on the notion of river rights to ask how we might shape a future that remains liveable for all, Camille de Toledo also spoke in June 2026 at secondary schools in Saarland with students who hold the future in their hands. The project was organised as a collaboration between the Käte Hamburger Centre CURE and the Institut d’Études Françaises Saarbrücken.
To help them prepare their students for the meeting, teachers received a teaching dossier in advance. It contains questions and ideas for classroom use, cased on Camille de Toledo’s book L’Internationale des rivières, as well as a German–French glossary introducing the central concepts of “Rivers Beyond Borders”. The meetings with Camille de Toledo took place on 15 and 17 June in 90-minute workshops, based on the card game that Camille de Toledo developed to accompany his initiative for river rights. The cards sparked a lively, thoughtful, and remarkably precise discussion between the students and Camille de Toledo: What kind of future do we want to create? How do we want to rethink our relationship with nature? And what role might the Saar play here as a legal subject?
The project was conceived and realised together with Camille de Toledo by IEF director Anne-Sophie Donnarieix, Morgane Brette, IEF staff member for teaching projects, and CURE programme director Hannah Steurer.
The teaching dossier can be downloaded here for use in the classroom.
