ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2026

Camille de Toledo is a writer, artist, and curator. He holds a doctorate in comparative literature from Paris Cité University and teaches narrative arts at the National School of Visual Arts – La Cambre in Brussels. In 2022, he was appointed lecturer in ecopoetics at Aix-Marseille University. In 2008, he founded the European Authors’ Societies (Sociéte européenne des auteurs/SEUA) to promote the idea of “translation as a language”. His work also includes contributions to the opera La Chute de Fukuyama (The fall of Fukuyama, 2013), the play Sur une île (On an island, 2016; its German version, Auf der Insel, was performed at the Primeurs Festival in Saarbrücken in 2017), which explores the Utøya attack, and the diptych PRLMNT, which examines the collapse of the European Union and its political reconfiguration through interspecies institutions that recognise natural entities and ecosystems as legal persons. His novel Thésée, sa vie nouvelle(Theseus, his new life, Verdier, 2020) was shortlisted for the Prix Goncourt and won the Franz Hessel Prize in 2021. Le fleuve qui voulait écrire (The river that wanted to write, Les Liens qui Libèrent/Manuella Éditions/Flammarion, 2021/2024) was a finalist for Le Nouvel Observateur’s environmental book prize. The book documents and articulates the project of the Parliament of the Loire, which is now being advanced through L’Internationale des rivières (The International of rivers, Verdier, 2026), reflecting de Toledo’s long-standing commitment to securing recognition of European rivers as legal persons. He will serve as curator of the European Capital of Culture Bourges 2028.
